Since it has been one of the coldest stretches of weather we have had in quite a few winters, there is not much fly fishing going on. That means its a great time to hit the books. I wanted to tell you about this great book by George Daniel, Dynamic Nymphing. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a professional competitive fly angler and guide named Jesse Haller. If you look up the Pro Fly Anglers Tour you can check him out on there. As Jesse was training for the Tour he put together some mini comps to help get ready for the tourney. There were 7 other guides and quality fishermen at this particular comp and at the end of the tourney all of us caught between 1-3 fish using similar tactics of dries and nymphing with sight indicators, Except for Jesse, who landed 11 using tight line nymphing techniques. I was stunned and asked him about the tactics he was using. He explained a bit and recommended reading this book. It was an eye opening experience for me to see how effective this method was. I immediately set out to learn more and rigged up a rod and hit the water before ever reading the book. On the first day out I landed some nice fish where I had previously worked over with a dry dropper rig and hooked 2 or 3. I continued to learn the method and have had a lot of success, but until I read the book I felt there was still a lot I did not know. Dynamic Nymphing really expertly describes all aspects of nymphing with words, pictures and diagrams from rigging to presentation. I highly recommend the book to anyone looking to up their game on the water. Give the book a read, then hire a guide for a half day or so to help you dial things in and I guarantee you will be upping your catch rate immensely.
